Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% from The Ordinary is a topical skin serum meant to smooth and brighten the skin and improve the skin barrier for increased hydration.
On EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database website, this product is rated a 3, which falls into the yellow, or moderate hazard, category. There is zero to fair data on most of the ingredients.
There is plenty of information on Deceim’s website about this product.
The reviews seem to be mixed with some people stating the product works amazingly well for them, with others saying they have pretty bad irritation from it.
My own personal review will fall somewhere in the middle.
Benefits of Niacinamide For The Skin
The benefits of Niacinamide may include:
- brighten skin tone
- reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles
- reduce the appearance of pores
- improve the skin barrier to increase hydration
- zinc is added to help control inflammation from acne flare ups
My Review
As mentioned above, many of the lower rated reviews were from consumers complaining about irritation from the product. I had absolutely no irritation what-so-ever, but very few products have ever been irritating to my skin.
The positive reviews rave about how much brighter and healthier their skin looks and about the reduction of acne breakouts.
My Skin Type
I have normal to combination skin. I do get a tad oily, mostly around my nose. There are visible pores on my nose and cheeks. I do not get blemishes often.
There is a larger dark spot on one check and some smaller spots or freckling around my eyes. I also have several areas of melasma under my eyes and on my cheeks.
I’m 45 with only slight fine lines around my eyes that become more visible when I smile. I am also noticing a decrease in firmness.
There are dark circles under my eyes and especially in the inner corners of my eyes.
How I Use Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
I used this product over my entire face after washing in the morning and prior to moisturizer.
It goes on smoothly and absorbs very quickly without leaving any sticky residue.
As mentioned above, I experience no irritation or redness.
I used this product until the bottle was gone which lasted about 6 weeks. The website does mention to allow 8 weeks for full results.
I can’t honestly say that I’ve noticed a significant difference in my skin. Because I don’t have acne, I can’t speak on the effectiveness of it in that regard.
I do feel there may be a slight decrease in the size of my pores and a little less oiliness as well, but both could be due to change in climate with the winter season upon us.
Now that the bottle is gone, if I notice an increase in the pore size or oiliness, I will update this post.
I do not plan to continue to use this product at this time, but only because I’m not sure that my skin really needs a niacinamide at this time.
Cons
For me, there are no cons to this product except that maybe I am not the intended consumer for it.
From the reviews, it may be wise to patch test before using this product over your entire face in case of irritation.
As always, I do still recommend trying this product if you feel that your skin could benefit from it. Products from The Ordinary are so budget-friendly that they are absolutely worth trying. This particular product starts at just $6.00.
You never know, it could end up becoming one of your “holy grail” beauty products. And if not, you won’t be out much money at all.
