I have been tempted by Boxycharm for years. I’ve read so many reviews with most of them being very positive.
When I decided that I finally wanted to subscribe, I thought I could just sign up for Boxycharm Premium, since I liked the products I was seeing in those boxes a lot more than the regular box.
Well, Boxycharm doesn’t quite work that way. I’ll explain exactly how it works below, as well as share my first Boxycharm review.
What Is Boxycharm?
Boxycharm is a monthly beauty subscription. They send a variety of skin care, hair care, and makeup products and tools each month.
How Does Boxycharm Work
This is where things get a little bit confusing, so I will try to break it down and make it easy to understand.
Boxycharm has 3 different types of boxes, their regular monthly base box, a premium monthly box, and a luxury box that is only available quarterly.
Initially, I wanted to only sign up for the premium box. I kept seeing a button for “Join The Waitlist” but every time I clicked it, it took me to the page to sign up for the regular monthly box.
As it turns out, you have to be a subscriber to the monthly base box in order to be able to add-on the Premium box. That’s right, you will get two different boxes each month – each with it’s own cost (more on that in a minute).
BoxyLuxe is a luxury box available every 3 months. You pay an additional fee to upgrade your base box to a luxury box. More details on this box are below.
How Much Does Boxycharm Cost?
Here’s a quick breakdown of each box, how much it costs, and what you can expect to get.
- BoxyCharm Monthly Base Box: this box is $24.99 a month. You will receive 5 full size beauty products, one of which you get to choose, with a value of at least $120.00. There is a huge variety of brands from lesser known brands to very popular brands. There are also many box variations each month, so what I have in my box may be completely different from what you will receive.
- BoxyCharm Premium: to get this box, you must be subscribed to the base box for $24.99/month, then join the waitlist for Premium. Once you are activated from the waitlist, you pay an additional $35.00/month for this box. There is a note that you can cancel either your base box or Premium box at anytime after the first month of being subscribed to both. The Premium box has 6-7 full size beauty products, one of which you get to choose, with a value of at least $175.00.
- BoxyLuxe: this is a quarterly box that replaces your base box if you choose to upgrade. The cost is an additional $25.00. You will get 8-9 full size beauty and lifestyle products, with the ability to choose up to 2 products. The value of this box is at least $250.
All of the boxes are eligible for add-on’s, access to the pop-up shops, and rewards for reviewing the products that you receive in your box each month.
It seems as if there is frequently a bonus for new subscibers, you can check out the current offers on the BoxyCharm website sign up page.
May 2020 BoxyCharm Review
So, like I mentioned above, I didn’t really want the standard BoxyCharm box, but when it showed up and I saw what was inside, I was shocked.
This box is so good! I don’t want to hype it up too much, because of all the variations possible (and who knows what will come next month), but I’m very happy with what came this time around.
I also want to note that I did not get to choose an item this month because it’s my first month and I also signed up after the cutoff to choose for June. Come July, I should be able to choose one product and will explain that better once I’ve gone through the process.
GlamGlow BerryGlow Recovery Face Mask ($49.00)
I was pleasantly surprised to see a full size GlamGlow product in my first box. I’ve only ever used the original GlamGlow mud mask, but loved it.
This mask is made with berries and contains antioxidants and probiotics. It’s supposed to boost the health of your skin, restore radiance, and balance your skin’s natural biome.
I love that you only have to wear this for 10 minutes, and just tissue off the excess.
It’s creamy and has a light fresh scent. I immediately rubbed some into the back of one hand. It’s very moisturizing and leaves a nice glow.
Studio Makeup Ease To Wear Eyeshadow Palette ($35.00)
I’ve never heard of this brand, but the colors of the palette are gorgeous. It’s a very neutral color scheme that looks as if it will work great on just about any skin tone.
This item is a BoxyCharm exclusive and not sold anywhere else.
These are the colors all swatched on my arm without primer. I’m fairly light skinned and you can see that some of the colors don’t show up very well, while others have a nice payoff even without primer.
I haven’t loved any eyeshadow that I’ve tried since using up my Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette. The shades Gilded and Wicked look similar to the two shades that I used the most from Urban Decay.
I also love the shade Dusk in this palette. It could be really pretty for spring and summer.
I’ll update this after I try it on my eyes to comment more regarding color payoff and how long it lasts with primer (I always use eye shadow primer).
Pretty Vulgar Uncaged Eyeshadow Primer ($22.00)
Speaking of eyeshadow primer…
Eyeshadow primer is hit or miss for me. The 2 that I like best are Urban Decay and Lorac. I’m literally down to the last couple of uses in my current tube, so this is perfect timing.
Again, this is a brand I’m unfamiliar with (I haven’t been buying much makeup and stopped all my subscriptions a few years ago, until recently), but happy to try.
I’m also not wearing as much makeup now that I’m home all the time, but this box has me excited to play around a bit more.
I’ll update this after I try the product to let you know how it works as compared to my usual favorites. Just for reference, it is the same price on Amazon.
AYAM Beautycare Dead Sea Minerals + Vitamin C Serum Makeup Remover Wipes ($17.00)
Confession: I am terrible about washing my face at night. I always have been, unless I have a pack of makeup wipes.
Again, this brand is new to me, but being that they are just makeup wipes, I’m sure they work just fine.
There are 25 wipes in the package and the expiration is all the way out in 2023. They are the same price on Amazon.
Gerard Cosmetics Lip Pencil in Bel Air ($16.00)
Yet again, another brand that I have never heard of. This is kind of why I was preferring the Premium box over this one, but if these products work, then I’m very happy with what I’ve gotten.
Lip liner is something that I’ve been wanting to experiment more with. I have small lips and as I’m getting older, my top lip seems to be disappearing even more.
This is a beautiful shade of rose pink and I can see it working on most skin tones, unlike the khaki brown color that I got in my Allure Box last month!
It’s very soft and easy to apply.
I did find it on Amazon for $10.48. The reviews are pretty good!
Free New Subscriber Gift: Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion Age Defying Exfoliator Limited Edition ($79.00)
I’m shocked at the retail price of this item. I’ve gotten samples of this product before and I love how well it works, but I’d never pay that much for it.
I did find it marked down online at Ulta for $47.40 and on Amazon for $44.50.
This was my free gift for subscribing to BoxyCharm, so I won’t add it into the total value of this month’s box, but it was a nice bonus to receive.
Final Thoughts
Like I mentioned at the beginning of my review, I am estactic to have received the items that I did in this box.
The retail value of my particular box is $139.00 which, in my opinion, is a great deal. I spent $25.00 and received 5 products that I’ll use and hopefully love.
This is my first BoxyCharm ever and I’m kicking myself for not subscribing sooner. Even if there were items that I didn’t care for, I could easily gift them or donate them.
This month I love everything and will be trying it all! I’ll also be reviewing my items on the BoxyCharm website to earn Charm (points) that can be exchanged for products after you earn a certain amount.
I’m really looking forward to June’s BoxyCharm now and even more excited for the day I finally get off of the wait list for the Premium box!
