Sphalerite has been growing in popularity in the crystal community recently. It’s no surprise though as this crystal tends to be filled with sparkly, druzy pockets all over.
It’s usually in the black to brown color range, and can rarely be found in shades of yellow, blue, red and dark purple. Sometimes sphalerite is found with purple fluorite, calcite and agate.
It’s a fairly common crystal and usually very reasonably priced.
What Is Sphalerite?
Sphalerite is an ore mineral consisting of zinc sulfide.
While sphalerite is used in metal products, rubbers and medicines, it is also treasured by some for its potential metaphysical properties, as well.
Its hardness is 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
Sphalerite is most readily available in forms of polished crystals such as towers and points, spheres and cubes. It can also be purchased in raw form. It is not as commonly used for carvings.
Sphalerite is very common and can be found in the Mississippi River valley region in the United States as well as many areas of the world including Australia, Burma, Germany, England, Italy, Spain, and Peru.
Chakras
Sphalerite is a grounding crystal and associated with primarily the root chakra.
It can help with balancing your male and female energies.
Zodiac
Sphalerite is linked to the astrological signs of Gemini and Scorpio.
Benefits
Some of the major benefits you may experience from this crystal are:
- Increased energy
- Increased creativity and drive
- Increased confidence and courage
- Increased psychic ability and spirituality
How To Care For Sphalerite
Recharge sphalerite by placing in sunlight for just a few hours or moonlight, or by using other crystals, like selenite. You can also remove any negative energy by smoke cleansing your crystals with incense.
Where To Buy Sphalerite
Crystals should only be purchased from reliable sellers who source their products consciously. There are many fake crystals on the market and unethical practices in sourcing these stones.
We have consciously sourced, legitimate sphalerite available for sale in our Etsy store, or on our sister site, Jaxy Crystals, with new options added regularly. You can also find us on Tiktok where we hold really fun live sales.

The misinformation is not your fault—the source for these specimens is to blame. They’re being incorrectly marketed all over the place.

but that’s not sphelerite from what I’ve been researching. it’s a type of quartz shown above where sphelerite comes from zinc, ore and is usually dark brown, red and some cases orange.

Yes…this information is currently going viral in the mineral and crystal social media world and I am re-learning. I plan to update once I am able to. For the time being, I am adding a disclaimer. Thanks!
Certified Geologist says
Geologist here with a PHD. Great info on Sphalerite BUT the polished pieces shown in the pictures are actually NOT sphalerite most are brecciated limestone or brecciated jasper with quartz, chalcedony or sometimes calcite Druze. Sphalerite NEVER forms purple and the REAL mineral Sphalerite is brittle and rarely polished a quick Mindat or google search will show you actual Sphalerite. Several of the pieces shown in these pictures were sent to labs with results showing small to no zinc sulfide content meaning the majority of polished towers, spheres, cubes ect on the market are NOT the mineral Sphalerite. You say you have consciously sourced legitimate sphalerite when in fact what you sell is NOT Sphalerite

Yes, I know that this information is just now coming to light in a viral kind of way. I do “consciously” source my materials meaning I use a variety of wholesalers I’ve had excellent sales history with and do my own research, but at the time of purchase and writing this post, EVERYONE was calling this sphalerite. When I did my own research I only saw this as polished sphalerite and rough pieces which often don’t look exactly the same as polished for many minerals. This website isn’t updated often, as it’s a hobby-site, BUT this is first on my list to re-write as soon as I am able to. For the time-being I plan to add a disclaimer.
