See everything that came in my May 2020 Birchbox review, what I think of it all, and how you can get your own Birchbox subscription with their latest offer!

I believe Birchbox was the first or second subscription box that I ever signed up for way back in 2013! It has always been one of my favorites and I tend to like most of the samples that they send, with an occasional box that I find to be just okay.
I quit Birchbox when my youngest son was born in mid-2015 and I was no longer working, but recently rejoined. I’ve gotten a few boxes now, and have really liked most of the products.
I have a yearly subscription and really look forward to getting my box each month. It’s a like a little box of surprise each month!
What Is Birchbox?
Birchbox is a monthly beauty sample box subscription. They send samples (and occasionally full size items) of skin care, makeup, hair care, and small life style products.
Can You Customize Your Birchbox?
You can customize your Birchbox to some extent.
Most months you can either chose 1 sample with the remaining samples being a surprise, or choose a curated box in which you will know all of the samples, or exchange your box for a full size product or points that can be used to purchase items in their online store.
Curated boxes and full size items tend to go pretty fast.
You can also opt out of all of these options and have your entire box be a surprise.
Birchbox sends out tons of different box variations each month. What you get, if you sign up and receive a May 2020 Birchbox may vary greatly from what is shown in this review.
How Much Does Birchbox Cost?
There are 3 options when signing up for a Birchbox subscription:
- Monthly Plan: $15 a month and you can cancel anytime.
- 6 Month Plan: $14 a month and you are committing to 6 months, but billed monthly.
- 12 Month Plan: $13 a month and you are committing to 12 months, but billed monthly.
You can see all of the details and any free gifts or discounts with purchase from the sign up screen on the Birchbox website. They usually have some pretty good incentives for signing up!
May 2020 Birchbox Review
Birchbox always comes with a little card that has each product listed on it, as well as the cost of the item if you were to purchase it in it’s full size.
This month, they also included a small card honoring the Female Founder Collective, as Birchbox was co-founded by 2 women.
Oribe Split End Sealer
This is the item that I chose this month. I’m a huge fan of Oribe and will try almost anything of theirs at least once and have purchased several full-size items after sampling them.
This is an expensive brand, but I’ve had nothing but great results with any Oribe product that I’ve tried. I expect that this one will be just as good.
Arrow Nourishing Lip Oil
Arrow is a newer Birchbox brand. This was actually one of the samples that subscribers could choose from. I’m assuming that this product is going to show up in most, if not all, boxes this month.
This is one of those lip products that changes color with your chemistry. I have no idea why I keep getting these types of items. I don’t like them and never like the color my lips change to. I have one open next to my bed that I’ll use at night sometimes. The rest I’ve tossed.
I think it would be best to pass this along to someone who is more likely to use it and like it.
Kate Somerville Skincare ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment
So, interestingly enough, this was also a choice for all subscribers this month. I’m not complaining, as it was a toss up for me between this item and the Oribe, but I don’t know why they gave us a choice when they were going to send all 3 items? Unless, not everyone who opted to choose a sample this month got all 3?
I was still happy to get this though. I haven’t used an exfoliator on my face for a long time, which is odd for me, as they have been staples in my shower for as long as I can remember.
This one is a cult favorite, for good reason. It works so good! My skin feels amazing after I use this and now I really need to get a full-size exfoliator because I’m hooked, once again.
Marcelle BB Cream Golden Glow
I was happy to see this sample in my box. I’ve been going without makeup more and more these days, so BB Creams are always great to give you a little glow.
I find these kinds of products especially nice now that my skin is getting older and a bit duller. It has a nice color to it once rubbed in and it’s not glittery or shiny. I’m not sure the color will work for me, unless I have a bit of a tan, though.
Number 4 Super Comb Prep and Protect
Now, I wasn’t too excited to see this item. I recently received another hair product from this brand that was supposed to smooth my hair (I think it was the Smoothing Balm?), but instead it made it fluffy and frizzy?
Because I have a few other similar products and due to my not-so-great experience with the other product, I have not used this and don’t plan to. I’ll pass it along to someone else to try.
Baseblue Airsponge
This is a makeup sponge for applying foundation or concealer. I was expecting it to be a regular size, but apparently they make sample size sponges.
I can see using this little guy for concealer or if you only use foundation on parts of your face, which I do. It works nicely for applying makeup with good coverage.
Final Thoughts
Overall I thought this was a decent box. Was it my favorite? No, but I do love getting to try a new Oribe product without having to pay the full price. The Kate Somerville is also a nice addition.
I’ll give the makeup sponge and BB cream a try once I have a little bit of a tan (self-tanner) on, but will likely pass along the Number 4 hair product and the lip oil.
