In the past, I would order from Stitch Fix about once a month and Trunk Club a few times a year to add some higher quality staples to my wardrobe each season.
I used to review those shipments on my primary blog, Delicious Little Bites, but those reviews don’t really fit into a food blog, hence the main reason that Sweet Honey Life was born.
It’s been about a year since I’ve ordered from Trunk Club, but when I checked my account, I saw that I had a credit. I decided to request a trunk for casual, but pretty, feminine pieces. Since we aren’t going out much at all at the moment, I wanted comfortable, versatile pieces for wearing around the house or backyard.
My previous stylist always did a great job with trying to meet my requests and sending a variety of items. I usually struggle with fit, but as I left feedback for items that haven’t worked, it seemed that she really caught on to when to size up or down for me.
This time around, I have a new stylist. It’s kind of like starting over. Even though most things didn’t work out for me, I still found a few pieces that I love.
Hopefully I’ll have the same stylist next time, as well.
Before I get into all of the items that I received for this June 2020 Trunk Club Review, let me first explain what Trunk Club is all about for those who might not be familiar with the service.
If you are already in the know, go ahead and jump to the June 2020 Trunk Club Review heading.
What is Trunk Club?
Trunk Club is a clothing subscription by Nordstrom.
When you sign up, you will need to fill out a style profile that includes questions about what you like and don’t like. You can also set a price range. Because this is Nordstrom, the price range is moderate to high. You won’t really find budget clothing here.
All of the clothing is of good to excellent quality and the same items you will find in-store or online at Nordstrom.
Trunk Club sends around 10 items per trunk. You get to preview the chosen items before the trunk ships. If there are items you really don’t like, you can decline them. You can then request new items be added before shipping, or just having what’s left shipped.
A unique feature of Trunk Club is that you can request not only clothing and accessories, but intimates, pajamas, and swim suits as well!
Why Order from Trunk Club Instead of Shopping In Store or Online?
The main reason to use Trunk Club is that it saves you time. Sorting through hundreds or thousands of items online is super time consuming. It’s even more time consuming to go in-store, especially if you’re working and have kids etc.
The other reason? You will be paired up with a personal stylist. Trunk Club has a messenger system so that you can actually communicate with your stylist about what types of items you’re looking for.
He or she will ask specific questions before choosing items that fit your style and requests. They also give you outfit recommendations for those items.
They always pick out items that I’d never choose for myself which is part of the fun. I’m always surprised by what I end up loving.
What To Do When Your Trunk Arrives
Once your trunk arrives, simply unpack it and try everything on.
If you don’t like an item, place it back in the trunk. They aren’t super concerned with how well you repack it. I always try to put the clothing back in it’s specific bag though.
Set aside what you love and want to keep, then return what you don’t. You can also exchange items for different colors and/or sizes which is one of my favorite features of Trunk Club.
After you decide what you want to keep, go into your account online and check-out. Make sure to be specific about why you kept or returned at item. It helps them to know your style and choose more fitting items for you in future trunks.
How Do You Return The Items You Don’t Want?
Trunk Club supplies you with a return label and 2 pieces of tape so that you can return everything in the same box that you received it in.
You can even request a UPS pick up date right from the website.
How Much Does Trunk Club Cost?
When you request your trunk, you can expect to be charged a $25 styling fee. This fee is credited towards anything that you purchase. A styling fee is pretty common for clothing subscriptions like this.
You should also know that you don’t have to subscribe to regular trunks. While you can set up a regular interval, you can also just order a trunk whenever you want.
The cost of the items you may receive varies greatly. With Nordstrom, the prices are generally in the moderate to high range.
Remember, you set your price ranges in the survey and can also reiterate to your stylist what prices you are comfortable paying.
Be aware that there is no discount for keeping a certain amount of items like with Stitch Fix, but if an item goes on sale before you check out, they do give you the reduced price. This has happened with every trunk I’ve ordered, so far.
Now that we have all that down, let’s get to the items I received.
June 2020 Trunk Club Review
Adidas Stan Smith Sneaker ($80.00)
When I saw these sneakers in my box preview, I noticed that my stylist was planning to send a size 7 rather than my usual 7.5. When I looked up the item, it does say that they run big and to size down a half size.
I looked up some other reviews because sometimes I size up to an 8. Some reviews mentioned that they fit true to size so I changed the size to send back to a 7.5.
Big mistake. These run huge. I’m not even sure a size 7 would fit me.
But they are really cute and I can see pairing them with cuffed jeans and a tee or sweatshirt. I just have NO idea what size I would actually be.
Verdict: returned, but may try them again in person.
7 For All Mankind Roll Cuff Demin Shorts ($180.00)
In my box preview, I actually removed a pair of denim shorts because they cost to much. In their place were these even more expensive shorts.
I actually love this brand and will splurge on it, if the fit is right and it’s an item that I need. Neither were the case for me with these, as I own a similar pair and the fit was way too big.
I’m not sure why my stylist sent a size 30. I’ll have to go back into my account to recheck my sizes, because the biggest size I can remember ordering in the last several years is a 29.
I’m not even sure a 28 wouldn’t have been a good fit though. Maybe these run big, I don’t know, but they also have a lot of stretch to them.
Verdict: returned
Ella Sandal ($59.96)
I was on the fence with these shoes when I saw them in my trunk preview because the sole looked a little too rugged for my taste.
I tried them on and instantly fell in love. They are so comfortable and the color is neutral and easy to wear with a lot of different types of outfits.
I don’t love the way they go on and off, but I like they way they look when they are on and can’t wait to actually have somewhere to go to wear them!
Verdict: kept
Equipment Amaury Pleat Stripe Silk Top ($74.99)
I didn’t love this shirt in my trunk preview but unless I really dislike something, I’ll give it a try anyway. I just never know when something might look better on than it does in images.
This shirt feels like butter. Seriously, it’s the silkiest, most luxurious fabric. But, even though this shirt is high quality and well made, it just didn’t work for me.
It’s simply not my style. I also asked for casual, pretty summer clothes, but this is more work wear and pretty. Plus, it just won’t work with kids.
I also want to note that this top was originally $250.00. When my trunk was shipped, it was already marked down to $99.98 and when I went to checkout, it was $74.99.
Verdict: returned
Madewell Sheer Sleeve Button Front Dress ($148.00)
Once again, I didn’t think I would like this dress when I saw my trunk preview. The model was blonde and fair skinned, so it was hard to picture myself in this. I almost declined it.
As it turns out, I absolutely love this dress. It’s very flattering and I think it works better on darker hair and/or darker skin tones.
I actually didn’t buy this dress from Trunk Club, though. Before I purchase anything from Trunk Club, I’ll do a quick search to see if it’s less expensive anywhere else. Occasionally, I will find an item or two for much less, but usually you get the best price through Trunk Club.
This dress was marked down to $99.00 on Madewell’s website and then they were having an additional 35% off sale. I ended up paying only $65.00 for the dress.
Once I have my dress, I’ll take a photo wearing it to add to this post.
Verdict: returned, but purchased elsewhere.
Caslon Eyelet Detail Tee ($49.00)
This is such a cute staple piece that can be paired with almost anything! It’s lightweight and I absolutely adore the eyelet detail sleeves that also runs along the top back portion of the shirt.
I was 100% committed to buying this, but after making a quick run to an orthodontist appointment with my son, I spilled coffee all over the white shirt that I was wearing.
It was in that moment that I thought that maybe white wouldn’t be the best choice.
What I love about Trunk Club is that not only can you exchange items for different sizes, but also for different colors. I ended up exchanging this for black, which was the only other color available.
As soon as I get it, I’ll take a photo to add to this post.
Verdict: exchanged for black.
Caslon V-neck Knit Blouson Jumpsuit ($69.00)
When I looked over my trunk preview, I didn’t think I’d like this item, but recently bought a jumpsuit that I love, so I decided to give it a try.
I pulled this out of the box and immediately thought “Please, please, please let this look good on me!” It’s so soft and I could totally see lounging around the house in this all day and just being in heaven.
Unfortunately, it hits me all wrong. I swear I could see every minuscule dimple in my pretty dimple-less thighs.
So, the jumpsuit doesn’t work for me, but now I want to look into Caslon more to see if they make separates in this same material.
Verdict: returned
Leith Tiered Maxi Skirt ($65.00)
My gut said to decline this, but for whatever reason, I had it sent anyway. I don’t care for the color or the floral pattern, so I have no idea why I decided to try it.
I ended up liking the long fit and the flow of the skirt, but the top tier was tight around my thighs and uncomfortable. I also didn’t like the color or pattern in person.
Verdict: returned
DIFF Georgia 54mm Cat-Eye Sunglasses ($85.00)
I didn’t think that I checked off that I’d like to have sunglasses sent, but I may have been confusing that with bathing suits. Since my stylist picked them out and I thought they were cute, I had them sent.
When I tried them on, my 12-year-old son didn’t respond with his usual “No, just no.” I think this made me feel like they must look awesome on me and that I should buy them – ha!
I talked myself out of them because I have a terrible habit of just throwing my sunglasses in my bag where, of course, they get scratched up etc.
Until life slows down, I think I need to stick to cheaper sunglasses.
Verdict: returned
Billabong x Sincerely Jules Hard to Tell Linen Blend Shorts ($26.97)
When checking out my Trunk preview, I thought these were really cute and I loved the low price and the fact that they are linen, which I’ve been obsessed with lately.
There is no better way to crush a girl’s self esteem then to send her a pair of shorts in size medium that don’t even come close to buttoning. Thankfully, I tried these on first and then every other size medium fit much better and restored my confidence!
These shorts are also really see-through. So a double no for me.
Verdict: returned.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I felt kind of so-so about this trunk and with the items that my stylist chose for me.
Fit wasn’t as much of an issue as it’s been in the past, so I was happy about that. I didn’t feel my request for “casual” was entirely met, but mostly.
I found a dress I am in love with and shoes I can wear with so much of what I already own, plus a basic tee shirt with pretty details.
I really do love Trunk Club. The ability to communicate with the stylist, the quality of the clothing, and the convenience are all huge benefits of this service.
Because I didn’t keep that much, I plan to order another trunk soon, then I’ll probably hold off until fall.
