Last month I share my first Boxycharm review. I didn’t sign up in time for the cut off to choose a product this month either, so once again my entire box was a surprise.
I’m also excited that I was pulled from the wait list and will be receiving a BoxyCharm Premium box this month too! Keep an eye out for that review very soon, as well.
I’ll explain exactly how BoxyCharm works below, as well as share my second BoxyCharm base box review. If you already know the deal, skip on down to the June 2020 BoxyCharm Review heading.
What Is Boxycharm?
Boxycharm is a monthly beauty subscription. They send a variety of skin care, hair care, and makeup products and tools each month.
How Does Boxycharm Work
This is where things get a little bit confusing, so I will try to break it down and make it easy to understand.
Boxycharm has 3 different types of boxes, their regular monthly base box, a premium monthly box, and a luxury box that is only available quarterly.
Initially, I wanted to only sign up for the premium box. I kept seeing a button for “Join The Waitlist” but every time I clicked it, it took me to the page to sign up for the regular monthly box.
As it turns out, you have to be a subscriber to the monthly base box in order to be able to add-on the Premium box. That’s right, you will get two different boxes each month – each with it’s own cost (more on that in a minute).
BoxyLuxe is a luxury box available every 3 months. You pay an additional fee to upgrade your base box to a luxury box. More details on this box are below.
How Much Does Boxycharm Cost?
Here’s a quick breakdown of each box, how much it costs, and what you can expect to get.
- BoxyCharm Monthly Base Box: this box is $24.99 a month. You will receive 5 full size beauty products, one of which you get to choose, with a value of at least $120.00. There is a huge variety of brands from lesser known brands to very popular brands. There are also many box variations each month, so what I have in my box may be completely different from what you will receive.
- BoxyCharm Premium: to get this box, you must be subscribed to the base box for $24.99/month, then join the waitlist for Premium. Once you are activated from the waitlist, you pay an additional $35.00/month for this box. There is a note that you can cancel either your base box or Premium box at anytime after the first month of being subscribed to both. The Premium box has 6-7 full size beauty products, one of which you get to choose, with a value of at least $175.00.
- BoxyLuxe: this is a quarterly box that replaces your base box if you choose to upgrade. The cost is an additional $25.00. You will get 8-9 full size beauty and lifestyle products, with the ability to choose up to 2 products. The value of this box is at least $250.
All of the boxes are eligible for add-on’s, access to the pop-up shops, and rewards for reviewing the products that you receive in your box each month.
It seems as if there is frequently a bonus for new subscibers, you can check out the current offers on the BoxyCharm website sign up page.
June 2020 BoxyCharm Review
So, like I mentioned above, this is my second BoxyCharm base box. Because I took a long break (years!) from subscription boxes, it’s kind of like it’s all new to me again. I get so excited for each box to arrive.
This box is not as exciting to me as my last box, but it’s still a solid box and since I took such a long break from subscribing to beauty boxes, I’ll still get plenty of use out of most of the items.
I do also want to note that I did not get to choose an item this month because even though I signed up in May, it was I after the cutoff to choose for June. For July’s box, I have already chosen an item so I know that there will be at least one item that I want in my box.
Kylie Skin Foaming Face Wash ($24.00)
It seems as if most subscribers, whether to the base box or one of the upper tiered boxes, are getting this Kylie Skin Foaming Face Wash. It’s not much of a surprise since Kylie is a brand ambassador for BoxyCharm.
I’ve seen a lot of people saying they don’t want anything “Kardashian” in their BoxyCharm boxes. I’ve also seen people really excited about it. I’m kind of indifferent.
I would have preferred to try a Kylie lip kit or something along those lines, since face wash is pretty boring. Useful, but boring.
It has a nice smell, foams up really good, and is actually made in the USA (with globally sourced ingredients). So overall, it’s a good item and pretty much covers the cost of the box.
Smashbox Photo Finish Weightless Setting Spray ($24.00)
I like the brand Smashbox, but I don’t really use setting sprays and haven’t been wearing much makeup lately, even though I love it.
I do notice, when I wear makeup, that by the end of the day, there’s no sign of blush and depending on what primer and eye shadow that I use, it might be creased.
Maybe I should actually be using a setting spray – at least on days when I’m going to be out of the house. I haven’t tried this yet, in case I decide not to keep it.
Lilly Lashes Triple X Mascara ($24)
Even though I stopped all of my beauty box subscriptions a few years back, subscribing to just a couple smaller ones for a few months has restocked my mascara for the next year!
Needless to say, I’m not super excited for more black mascara. And, this is not a brand that I am at all familiar with.
I’m going to have to go through my stash to see which ones are for making lashes look thicker and which ones have good reviews.
This one is suppose to give extra volume, so I may end up keeping it based on other’s reviews.
KAB Cosmetics Lip Duo in Charming ($40.00, listed on the KAB website for $38)
KAB is another brand that I’m not familiar with. Apparently the company was started by a Real Housewife of somewhere and her daughters (sorry, I rarely watch TV). KAB is the initials of their first names.
The set includes a lip liner and a HUGE lip gloss (similar to a Kylie lip kit – imagine that!). It’s actually a really pretty, wearable shade that I would describe as a dark rose pink.
The color is called “Charming” and the KAB website has it listed as a limited edition, so it was likely made for BoxyCharm. I also noted that Boxy has the value listed as $40 but it’s $38 on the KAB website.
Laura Gellr Multitasking Cream to Powder Trio ($24.00)
I’ve tried a few other Laura Geller makeup products and have always really liked them, so I had decided not to be too upset if this is the palette that I get this month (we ALL wanted a Shared Planet eye shadow palette!).
The thing that bothers me about this is that its labeled as a eye, lip, cheek palette, but the only shade I’d use on all three is the Tuscan Coral. The other two, I’ll probably only use on my eyes.
I really do love the coral shade. In summer, it’s pretty much all I wear on my lips and cheeks.
These swatches wiped right off without any problem using just a dry tissue. That setting spray will come in real handy now!
Final Thoughts
Like I mentioned at the beginning of my review, I kind of just feel so-so about this box. There were SO many eye shadow palettes that could have been an option, so to get the Laura Geller just wasn’t quite as exciting – BUT I definitely have at least one palette coming in my premium box next month that I’m excited for.
The retail value of my particular box is $144.00 according to the values listed by BoxyCharm. Even though it’s not a super exciting box, it’s still a great value for $25. I’ll use at least 3 of the 5 items and may end up keeping all 5.
If I decide that I don’t want the items that I’m on the fence about, I could easily sell them, gift them, or donate them.
I’ll be sure to head over to review my items on the BoxyCharm website to earn Charm (points). Charms can be exchanged for products after you earn a certain amount.
I’m really looking forward to July’s BoxyCharm and even more excited to see what comes in the June Premium box!
