For my July 2020 Birchbox, once again, just like for my June 2020 Birchbox, I chose one of the 2 curated boxes that they now offer – Katia’s Picks. The other one is a clean beauty box, but I didn’t care for most the items in that one this month.
There were actually 3 curated boxes, but one fell into the “swap your Birchbox for a full size product” category. It was a curated box done by Refinery 29. There were a ton of products in this box, but it was sold out before us non-Aces got to choose.
You could still choose a sample or exchange your box for points if you wanted. The 3 samples this month were a Sand & Sky Australian Pink Clay Scrub (I’ve tried it), Floss eyeshadow (looks kind of cheap), and yet another Arrow product, this time for a coral cheek tint.
I was hoping to choose a sample because I miss the element of surprise with the curated boxes, but I just didn’t have any interest in the 3 choices. And, I really need a self tanner mitt – more on that in the review below!
What Is Birchbox?
Birchbox is a monthly beauty sample box subscription. They send samples (and occasionally full size items) of skin care, makeup, hair care, and small life style products.
Can You Customize Your Birchbox?
You can customize your Birchbox to some extent.
Most months you can either chose 1 sample with the remaining samples being a surprise, or choose a curated box in which you will know all of the samples, or exchange your box for a full size product or points that can be used to purchase items in their online store.
Curated boxes and full size items tend to go pretty fast, but they are now saying that they will always have 2 curated boxes and more of them available.
You can also opt out of all of these options and have your entire box be a surprise.
Birchbox sends out tons of different box variations each month. What you get, if you sign up and receive a July 2020 Birchbox may vary greatly from what is shown in this review.
How Much Does Birchbox Cost?
There are 3 options when signing up for a Birchbox subscription:
- Monthly Plan: $15 a month and you can cancel anytime.
- 6 Month Plan: $14 a month and you are committing to 6 months, but billed monthly.
- 12 Month Plan: $13 a month and you are committing to 12 months, but billed monthly.
You can see all of the details and any free gifts or discounts with purchase from the sign up screen on the Birchbox website. They usually have some pretty good incentives for signing up!

July 2020 Birchbox Review
Birchbox always comes with a little card that has each product listed on it, as well as the cost of the item if you were to purchase it in it’s full size.
Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream
It’s been a long time since I’ve used anything from Kiehl’s, but I do love this brand and the simplicity of their products. I’ve actually used this product before and love it, and now it’s been improved to remove some not-so-ideal ingredients.
This is a super hydrating facial cream that is intended for very dry skin. Unfortunately, we are not doing any swimming or beach-going this summer, so my skin is far from dry.
I’m setting this one aside for winter, when I will really need it.
Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray
I’ve had a sample of this product in another curated Birchbox that was filled with all Oribe products. I haven’t used it much because I feel like it doesn’t really do much for my thin hair.
I’ll have to give it another try or two before I decide if I’ll keep this second bottle.
Luseta Beauty Perfect Bonding No.3 Restoring Leave-In Cream
I have never heard of this brand, but do use a leave in treatment whenever I wash and blow dry my hair.
I love that this one is meant to lock in moisture and and protect your hair not only from heat tools, but also UV rays and pollution.
I’ll definitely be giving this one a try!
Caolion Magic Black Powder Sparkling Wash Powder
I feel like this cleansing powder is very similar to a charcoal mask, as far as the benefits of using it. It remove impuritues, excess oil, and helps with blackheads.
I don’t usually love these types of products, but I’ll use it because it’s a cleanser and not a mask, which I feel usually strips too much oil from my skin.
Bondi Sands Self Tanning Foam – Dark
I’m a little nervous about trying this because it’s meant for people with an olive complexion or who want a darker tan. I do love that it has a nice coconut scent to it.
I currently use St. Tropez Self Tanning Bronzing Mousse and don’t feel it’s dark enough, but I’ve been applying it with gloved hands rather than a mitt because it didn’t come with a mitt.
I’m going to try the St. Tropez with the mitt and see how I like that, then if it’s still not dark enough, I’ll try this one over it.
Bondi Sands Self Tanning Mitt
This is the item that I’m most excited about (it just wasn’t a super exciting box for me). I needed a tanning mitt, and now I have one.
I love to receive items like this that are useful and reusable.
Final Thoughts
Overall I thought this was a so-so box. I was disappointed with the sample choices and kind of indifferent about the curated boxes. But, I will actually use all of this except maybe the Oribe.
If I didn’t need a self tanning mitt, or use self tanner, I’m not sure if I would have picked an item to just give away, or if I would have exchanged my box for points.
I’m hoping next month will be a bit more exciting. It is kind of hard to get excited for samples, when my BoxyCharm’s base box is only $10 more and comes with 5 full size items.
