It’s a new year at Boxycharm and I’m curious to see if anything changes, in addition to the price increase a couple of months ago.
I was not too excited with the choice items for January and am now teetering on the fence over whether or not I am going to cancel this subscription. After several not so great months, I did cancel the base box a few months back.
The January box has left me still undecided, though it’s really not a bad box, and the choice items for February were, once again, unexciting. I might hang in there one more month and see what happens.
I’ll explain exactly how Boxycharm works below, as well as share a complete review of the products that I did end up getting in my Boxycharm Premium box. If you already know the deal, skip on down to the Janaury 2022 BoxyCharm Premium Review heading.

What Is Boxycharm?
Boxycharm is a monthly beauty subscription. They send a variety of full size skin care, hair care, and makeup products and tools each month.
Each month there is a theme. This month it’s “Better Beauty.”
How Does Boxycharm Work?
This is where things get a little bit confusing, so I will try to break it down and make it easy to understand.
Boxycharm has 3 different types of boxes, their regular monthly base box, a premium monthly box, and a luxury box that is only available quarterly.
Initially, I wanted to only sign up for the premium box. I kept seeing a button for “Join The Waitlist” but every time I clicked it, it took me to the page to sign up for the regular monthly box.
As it turns out, you have to be a subscriber to the monthly base box in order to be able to add-on the Premium box. That’s right, you will get two different boxes each month – each with its own cost (more on that in a minute). You can unsubscribe from the base box after that first month and just keep the Premium, if you want.
BoxyLuxe is a luxury box available every 3 months. You pay an additional fee to upgrade your base box to a luxury box. More details on this box are below.
How Much Does Boxycharm Cost?
Here’s a quick breakdown of each box, how much it costs, and what you can expect to get.
- BoxyCharm Monthly Base Box: this box is $25.00 a month. You will receive 5 full size beauty products, one of which you get to choose, with a value of at least $120.00. There is a huge variety of brands from lesser known brands to very popular brands. There are also many box variations each month, so what I have in my box may be completely different from what you will receive.
- BoxyCharm Premium: to get this box, you must be subscribed to the base box for $25.00/month, then join the waitlist for Premium. Once you are activated from the waitlist, you pay an additional $39.99/month for this box. There is a note that you can cancel either your base box or Premium box at anytime after the first month of being subscribed to both. The Premium box has 6-7 full size beauty products, two of which you get to choose, with a value of at least $175.00.
- BoxyLuxe: this is a quarterly box that replaces your base box if you choose to upgrade. The cost is an additional $25.00. You will get 8-9 full size beauty and lifestyle products, with the ability to choose up to 2 products. The value of this box is at least $250.
All of the boxes are eligible for add-on’s, access to the pop-up shops, and rewards for reviewing the products that you receive in your box each month.
It seems as if there is frequently a bonus for new subscribers, you can check out the current offers on the BoxyCharm website sign up page.
January 2022 Boxycharm Premium Review
bareMinerals Original Mineral Veil Loose Setting Powder ($ 27.00)
In addition to this powder, the first category for choices also included:
- Kosas Air Brow Tinted Volumizing Treatment Gel
- Izzy Zero Waaste Beauty Zero Waste Mascara
- Kosas Air Brow Clear Lifting Treatment Gel
I chose the powder because I thought it might be easiest to pass along to someone else. I’ve used it in the past and it works pretty good for me, but I have a few others that I want to use up so it would be quite awhile before I got to this one.
The eye brow products don’t appeal to me much because I rarely use them. I am overloaded on mascara and usually end up not liking them as much as my tried and true L’Oreal Carbon Black.
This product is made in the USA .
Wishful Clean Genie Cleansing Butter ($ 35.00)
The additional choice product for the second choice was:
- COVERFX Custom Enhancer Palette
This was an easy choice for me. I really like cleansing balms and was hopeful this cleansing butter would work the same way.
It doesn’t have quite the same texture as a cleansing balm. It’s actually much creamier and easier to scoop. However, it feels very similar once you start using it and dissolves makeup equally as well.
I was surprised to see Malachite extract as an ingredient. Malachite is a crystal and since I’ve recently started a crystal shop, this was a fun thing to learn. And, it’s not the only crystal-infused product in this box!
This product is made in Japan.
ATHR Beauty Desert Sunset Palette ($48.00)
Do I need another palette? No. But am I tempted to keep it anyway? Yes.
The colors are really pretty and I can see using most of these.
I haven’t heard of ATHR before, but it seems to fall into the clean beauty category as well as being environmentally conscious.
This eyeshadow claims to be crystal-charges pigment infused with amber powder to give your skin more glow from the light-reflective crystals.
Amber is not technically a crystal, but a fossilized resin, so there is a little misinformation here, but there is plenty of information about it having metaphysical properties.
This product is made in the USA.
Juice Beauty Bamboo Pore Refining Mask ($36.00)
I’m happy to see Juice Beauty in this month’s box, but unfortunately, I don’t need another clay mask. I already have several and they really aren’t my favorite to use.
I appreciate all of the natural ingredients in this mask and will be happy to pass it along to someone who will use it.
This product is made in the USA.
Persona Cosmetics Lip Liner ($14.00)
While I like lipliner, I usually only use very natural looking shades.
This lipliner is the shade of the packaging which is like a deep purplish-red. It’s name is 90210.
Because I don’t really have any lipsticks that would go with this color, that I can remember, I didn’t open the package yet.
I’ll keep it if I do have something that will work with it, or pass it along if I don’t.
Again, I haven’t heard of Persona before, but it does also appear to be a clean beauty brand.
This product is made in the USA.
lys Beauty Secure Skin Gripping Serum Primer ($20.00)
I get so many primers from Boxycharm, it’s kind of insane.
I’ve never heard of lys Beauty, but it is another clean beauty brand. I have also never used a gripping primer. My understanding was that gripping primers were to help hold foundation and other makeup in place. This one says it can be worn alone.
I’m undecided if I’ll keep this only because I have so much primer already, but I am curious about the whole gripping concept.
This product is made in Canada.
Final Thoughts
The retail value of my particular box is $180.00. I was happy to see that none of the products were insanely inflated in value, nor were any made in China.
I think Boxycharm really did stick to the “Better Beauty” theme this month. Initially, I didn’t love the box as a whole, but once I saw the theme I totally got it.
While not every item is for me, I shouldn’t have any trouble finding someone who will appreciate the other items.
I’m still on the fence about canceling, but hanging in there for now.
February 2022 Boxycharm Premium Choice Options
The FIRST choice items for the February 2022 Boxycharm Premium box are:
- Huda Beauty Mercury Retrograde Eyeshadow Palette ($67.00)
- FENTY BEAUTY Diamond Bomb All-Over Diamond Veil ($39.00)
The SECOND choice items for the February 2022 Boxycharm Premium box are:
- DIME BEAUTY CO. Eyelash Boost Serum ($44.00)
- ACEOLOGY Rose Quartz Gua Sha Facial Massager ($45.00)
I mentioned earlier in this post that I was not thrilled with the February choices.
The price difference in the first category is perplexing. I’m wondering if those that choose the lesser value item will get other higher valued items for the remainder of the products. Regardless, I choose the palette. If it’s not for me, I know lots of people love Huda Beauty.
The second category seems to be more evenly valued, but it’s really not. For eyelash serum, $44.00 is actually not too bad. But, Rose Quartz Gua Sha stones are nowhere near $45.00. I can get this exact gua sha stone for $5.00 when bought in bulk. Typically wholesale products are marked up 50% for retail, so $10.00.
But, I chose the stone anyway. I have one that I really like, but I figure I can give this one away as a gift with purchase for my crystal shop.
