After being more than a little disappointed with my July 2020 Boxycharm Premium 2020, I was really hoping for a better box this month.
After seeing the choice items, I knew from the start that this box was going to be much better. Even more so when I got to choose a second item (because of a little mishap with my June 2020 BoxyCharm Premium Box where I received the wrong palette).
After seeing the rest of my items, I have to say that I am thrilled with this box. And, next month’s choice items already have me excited for September too!
I’ll explain exactly how BoxyCharm works below, as well as share a complete review of my BoxyCharm Premium box. If you already know the deal, skip on down to the August 2020 BoxyCharm Premium Review heading.

What Is Boxycharm?
Boxycharm is a monthly beauty subscription. They send a variety of skin care, hair care, and makeup products and tools each month.
How Does Boxycharm Work?
This is where things get a little bit confusing, so I will try to break it down and make it easy to understand.
Boxycharm has 3 different types of boxes, their regular monthly base box, a premium monthly box, and a luxury box that is only available quarterly.
Initially, I wanted to only sign up for the premium box. I kept seeing a button for “Join The Waitlist” but every time I clicked it, it took me to the page to sign up for the regular monthly box.
As it turns out, you have to be a subscriber to the monthly base box in order to be able to add-on the Premium box. That’s right, you will get two different boxes each month – each with it’s own cost (more on that in a minute).
BoxyLuxe is a luxury box available every 3 months. You pay an additional fee to upgrade your base box to a luxury box. More details on this box are below.
How Much Does Boxycharm Cost?
Here’s a quick breakdown of each box, how much it costs, and what you can expect to get.
- BoxyCharm Monthly Base Box: this box is $24.99 a month. You will receive 5 full size beauty products, one of which you get to choose, with a value of at least $120.00. There is a huge variety of brands from lesser known brands to very popular brands. There are also many box variations each month, so what I have in my box may be completely different from what you will receive.
- BoxyCharm Premium: to get this box, you must be subscribed to the base box for $24.99/month, then join the waitlist for Premium. Once you are activated from the waitlist, you pay an additional $35.00/month for this box. There is a note that you can cancel either your base box or Premium box at anytime after the first month of being subscribed to both. The Premium box has 6-7 full size beauty products, one of which you get to choose, with a value of at least $175.00.
- BoxyLuxe: this is a quarterly box that replaces your base box if you choose to upgrade. The cost is an additional $25.00. You will get 8-9 full size beauty and lifestyle products, with the ability to choose up to 2 products. The value of this box is at least $250.
All of the boxes are eligible for add-on’s, access to the pop-up shops, and rewards for reviewing the products that you receive in your box each month.
It seems as if there is frequently a bonus for new subscibers, you can check out the current offers on the BoxyCharm website sign up page.

August 2020 Boxycharm Premium Review
Sunday Riley A+ High Dose Retinol Serum ($85.00)
The choice items this month were pretty amazing. Premium Boxycharm subscribers could choose 1 of these three items:
- Sunday Riley A+ High Dose Retinol Serum
- Sunday Riley C.E.O. Vitamin C Rich Hydration Cream
- Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Face Primer
I thought this was going to be a tough choice between the retinol and the C.E.O. product, but then I realized that the C.E.O. wasn’t the exact product from that line that I have been wanting to try.
I am a skin care fanatic, and am currently testing the Top 10 Products From The Ordinary, but there is no retinol on that product list. So, I am going to give the A+ High Dose Retinol a try.
It does take quite some time to show any difference in the skin. I may end up doing a separate review of this product.
Too Faced Born This Way Setting Powder ($33.00)
Some Boxycharm subscribers were able to choose a second item this month. This was done to make up for the fact that not all subscribers received a certain palette in a previous box.
I was one of those subscribers, although I liked the palette they sent instead much better!
The choices were this Too Faced Born This Way Setting Powder or DERMELECT Cosmeceuticals XL Lash Volumizer.
I chose the setting powder because I have no interest in lash boosting products. Although, I do want to try false (but natural looking) lashes.
I also really like Too Faced products so I figured this would be a product that I would probably like and definitely get use out of.
Ciate London New England Editor Palette ($32.00)
Because I chose the highest valued choice item, I wasn’t expecting to get anything else that was higher priced. I was actually happily surprised to see this Ciate London eyeshadow palette in my box.
The colors are beautiful. They are supposed to be inspired by New England in the fall.
There are a lot of shimmery colors, and 5 shades that are more matte.
I do love the colors and love that Boxycharm included a palette with a fall theme to it. I can’t wait to try this out soon!
Laura Geller Fortifying Lashes Eyelash Primer ($24.00)
Laura Geller is known for their primers, especially the cult favorite Spackle. This eyelash primer is a new product from the brand.
What makes this primer unique is that it’s not white, like most others. It’s black so that it blends more easily with your mascara.
I have never used an eyelash primer regularly. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’ve only ever tried a white one once and didn’t care for it.
I don’t know if I need an eyelash primer, but do plan on giving this a try. It’s a great addition to the box.
MAC Cosmetics Amplified Lipstick in Fast Play ($19.00)
This color of this MAC Fast Play lipstick looks to be a very wearable shade. I feel it’s very similar to other shades of lip products that I received recently.
This lipstick is a creamy, full coverage lipstick that is supposed to have a bold color payoff and a “semi-lustrous” finish.
I’ve never tried a MAC lipstick before (which is crazy to me!) so I’m pretty excited about this too. It looks like a great color for fall!
Afterspa Slip-on Exfoliator ($18.00)
This Afterspa exfoliator is actually marketed to be used to remove self-tanner once it starts to wear off on its own. But, it does also say it removed dead skin cells as well.
I wasn’t too excited for this item, but when I really thought it, I actually will use this. I don’t currently have a body scrub (I’m planning to make my own so stay tuned for that “recipe” in the future) and do wear self-tanner regularly.
So, once again, another great addition to finish up this box.
Final Thoughts
The retail value of my particular box is $211.00 which is amazing for a $35.00. Obviously, this is only the case if you are going to actually use the items, which I definitely will this month.
Overall I am much happier with this box than last months. The fact that I already knew that I was getting 2 products that I would definitely use made it worth to me even without the other 4 items. And even though the some of the non-choice items weren’t entirely “premium,” they are still useful items to have.
I’m really looking forward to September’s BoxyCharm Premium box. The choice items are:
- Ole Henriksen Phat Glow Facial Mask
- Marc Jacobs Youthquake Hydra-full Retexturizing Gel Crème Moisturizer
- Marc Jacobs Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter
I think I am going with the Youthquake. Initially, I wanted to try the highlighter, but some of the reviews say it’s really shimmery and hard to blend. I like my highlighter to be very subtle.
Which are you going to pick?
